Although I don’t remember too much of my childhood growing up in Ghana, I do remember the days  soaking up Ghana’s hot sun. Today was a gorgeous sunny afternoon and as I sat here with my eyes closed, I returned to the past. I began to reminisce the days of my childhood. Sitting  on the veranda in front of my house and taking in  the sub-sharan heat from my homeland. the heat that warmed my entire soul. The heat that would warm my entire soul for the rest of my life. The heat that one can never forget. Oh the nostalgia!

While sitting here, I started to also ponder about how African women are the future of Africa. They are the true bread winners in an any African society dating to e the beginning of civilization. At an early age, African women are taught to be strong, resilient, skilled and hardworking. They are not only gifted in domestic areas, but in everything else. Without them there would be no civilization. Ababaawa, which simply means “young woman” in the Akan language, is a representation of Mama Africa.

I was given the chance to pick out any item from the Yellow Hibiscus Gallery website. Shortly after browsing the gift shop page, I know exactly what I wanted. I selected the tote bag that was titled “Ababaawa”. It wasn’t just any polyester fabric tote. This tote bag had a beautifully painted image on it by the talented artist Daniel Nana Yaw Arthur-Baidoo. He is a young contemporary Ghanaian artist who’s pieces can be seen at the gallery, and on other posters and totes. My childhood experiences and being a young woman of African background made me select this bag. I identify with “Ababaawa”, and that is why I was so enticed with this bag selection.
